What is MIPS?

• Purpose: MIPS is designed to enhance the safety of helmets by providing additional protection against rotational forces that can occur during angled impacts.
• Structure: The system consists of a low-friction layer inside the helmet that allows the helmet to slide relative to the head. This mimics the brain's own protective mechanism and aims to reduce the rotational forces that can cause brain injuries.
• Function: During an impact, the MIPS layer allows a small rotational movement of the outer shell relative to the head. This movement can significantly reduce the rotational motion transferred to the brain, potentially reducing the risk of concussion and other brain injuries.
