Esther Stokes – Owner
Esther didn’t start skiing until she was an adult, but she fell in love with it quickly. She began working at Brighton as a ski instructor and continues to skin in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Part of what drew her into skiing was it gave her the chance to experience the mountains. Now she loves the family time that skiing provides as well. As a mother and a former ski instructor, she knows all the secrets to family fun skiing. As one of the owners, Esther does a little bit of everything at the shop and enjoys continuing to learn about the ski industry.
Fun Fact: All of Esther’s fingers are double jointed!
Jennifer Schroeder – Store Manager
Although Jennifer skis primarily at Alta now, she grew up skiing at Mammoth Lakes in California. For 10 years she spent the winter skiing in Mammoth while living and surfing in Baja for the summer. Her favorite parts about skiing are the beautiful mountains, the exercise, and the challenge to improve her skills- both in the resort and the backcountry. Jennifer loves working at Utah Ski Gear because it is a small, family fun business that helps a lot of people get out skiing. As a tele-skier, Jennifer specializes in tele-skiing and backcountry equipment. She also loves the chance to learn and talk about skiing and gear all day long!
Fun Fact: Jennifer once worked on the splat line of a fall ship!
Austin James Spencer – E-Commerce and Inventory Specialist/ Sales
Austin started skiing at the age of 4, first starting at Brighton and then transitioning over to Snowbird and Alta. He continues to ski at both Little Cottonwood resorts but gets his season pass to Alta. His favorite part about skiing is the opportunity to have fun with friends in nature. He also explains that there just isn’t anything else like the feeling of skiing powder (We all agree!). Austin enjoys working with other people who are passionate and knowledgeable about skiing. He also loves being able to handle ski gear every day and resolving issues that don’t always have a defined solution. In addition to skiing, Austin can help with any snowblading questions!
Fun Fact: Austin goes through about $80 in dog food a month for his 2 dogs.
Emily Leavens – Digital Media Manager/ E-Commerce Customer Support/ Sales
Emily started skiing in the Wasatch Mountains at just 17 months and has loved skiing ever since. She grew up as a competitive ski-racer, but now spends her time skiing for fun at Alta. Emily loves that skiing feels like flying and that it takes place in the beautiful mountains. She likes working at Utah Ski Gear because of the other people she works with, the small shop atmosphere, the ability for her to geek out over skiing every day. As a retired racer, she is knowledgeable on ski racing equipment as well as general skiing, tuning supplies, and Hotronic’s.
Fun Fact: Emily was home-schooled in middle school so that she could ski more.
Matthew McCarry – Ski Tuner
Matthew learned to ski at Toggenburg Mountain in New York at the age of 6. He grew up on the East Coast before recently moving to Utah and now skis at Alta. His favorite parts about skiing are exploring the mountains, being outside, and always having something to improve on. He particularly likes skiing in the trees and carving. He enjoys working at Utah Ski Gear because it allows him to be surrounded by people who also love to ski and explore the mountains.
Fun Fact: He broke his leg skiing at 13 years old.
Josh Walter– eBay Manager/Photographer/Sales
Josh grew up in Southern Utah and began exploring Brian Head in elementary school. He continued to ski at Brian Head until he moved to Salt Lake City 2 years ago. Now he skis at Park City and loves it because of the world-class terrain park. Josh also loves the freedom and adrenaline that skiing brings him. Favorite part about working at Utah Ski Gear is being able to be part of a company that strives to make skiing accessible to everyone. With a love for the park, Josh is especially knowledgeable on freestyle skiing.
Fun Fact: Josh is related to the last ruling Monarch of Hawaii- Queen Lilivokalani.
Jared Dangerfield – eBay Lister/Sales
Jared grew up in Utah and learned to ski at Brighton and Alta. Growing up in the Wasatch Mountains, he has a deep love for powder. However, Jared is also very passionate about Adaptive Skiing and is a ski instructor at the National Ability Center in Park City. Because of this, he primarily skis at Park City and Solitude now but also enjoys backcountry touring. Jared likes working at Utah Ski Gear because he gets to outfit people in affordable ski gear. Because of his history, he’ll be able to help anyone with adaptive skiing or backcountry touring questions.
Fun Fact: Jared went to South Korea to watch the Paralympic and helped set up an adaptive ski program in Pyeongchang.
Janet Jackson – Visual Advertising & Public Relations/Gear Handler/Sales
Janet didn’t start skiing until later in her life, but she quickly fell in love. She started skiing at Alta and in just three months skied Snowbird, coming down the famed Regulator Johnson over 20 times. She now skis at both Alta and Snowbird. She prefers hard packed snow and loves skiing during winter storms. She enjoys working at Utah Ski Gear because it allows her to serve in an industry that she feels passionate about. Janet loves being able to help people find the perfect ski boot!
Fun Fact: Janet is vegan and loves road biking!
Matt Bongard – Gear Handler
Matt learned to ski in West Virginia before moving to Utah. Now he mostly skis at Brighton, where he is also an instructor. However, Matt also loves skiing in the backcountry throughout the Wasatch. He enjoys working at Utah Ski Gear because he gets to help others find gear that gets them in the mountains where they can further learn about themselves. Matt is a passionate telemark skier and loves it because he feels it combines the best of skiing and snowboarding. If you have any questions on telemarking then Matt will be able to help you!
Abby Horsley – Gear Handler
Abby started skiing at 16 and fell in love with it. She started skiing at Snowbird and Brighton and primarily skis at Snowbird now. Being in the mountains with her friends is one of Abby’s favorite parts about skiing. She also loves skiing powder and doing backcountry kickers- she learned how to do a backflip two months after starting skiing! Getting to work with ski equipment and helping others get into the sport are Abby’s favorite parts about working at Utah Ski Gear.
Fun Fact: Abby has 8 brothers and one is her twin!
Anna Greeneisen– Gear Handler
Anna grew up skiing and Brighton before moving away for college. She recently moved back and has returned to her home mountain of Brighton to become a ski instructor. She enjoys skiing because it allows her to spend time in the mountains. He favorite part about working at Utah Ski Gear because she gets to learn more about ski and snowboarding gear.
Fun Fact: Anna lived in France when she was 5-7 years old.
Navarro Guerro – Ski Tuner
When Navarro (Navi) was 13, he received his first snowboard for his birthday. He started snowboarding in the mountains around Seattle as well as in Whistler. Now he mostly boards at Park City, but also enjoys going to Brighton sometimes. He likes pushing himself to try new tricks and loves riding with friends. Navi is passionate about slopestyle snowboarding and is very knowledgeable in the area as well. He enjoys being able to share this knowledge with customers and working with others who share his passion.
Fun Fact: During his free time, Navarro practices slopestyle and freeride mountain biking.
